The Purpose of Flexible Coupling

Service Exchange provides South Africa with earthmoving and mining equipment across the mining and construction industry. One of our specialised products is flexible couplings. These are used to transmit torque from one shaft to another when the two shafts are slightly misaligned. This is a valuable device that is used to reduce operation costs and production time.

Purpose of flexible coupling

The most common purpose of a flexible coupling is to provide a connection between shafts or units which are manufactured independently and to support the disconnection in case of repairs or maintenance. Flexible coupling support the misalignment of shafts of up to 3⁰ and introduce mechanical flexibility. They also have the ability to reduce the transmission of shock loads between two shafts.  Flexible coupling can also provide a form of protection against overloads, while connecting the driving and driven part together. Furthermore, they can be used as a power supply from one end to another and can reduce noise levels.

Types of Flexible Coupling

Flexible shaft coupling and quick release coupling – Are used in variety of hydraulic applications including the mining and construction industry. Quick release couplings supply a fast, connection of fluid between two units.

Beam– also known as a helical coupling- transmits torque between two shafts while leaving room for angular misalignment, parallel offset and axial motion which is directly proportional to each other. This design makes use of a single piece of material but becomes flexible once the material has been removed along the spiral path resulting in a curved flexible beam that has a helical shape.

With 40 years’ experience within our industry, we pride ourselves in providing quality mining and construction equipment throughout South Africa.
